Culture in danger! Biserici medievale în pericol!

medieval churches disappear before our eyes for

various reasons (such as the lack of administrators,

poor or badly directed funds, the lack of education in

the field of patrimony, the general lack of interest

towards culture and its economic and tourist

valorization, the lack of information and specialists

with a point of view, etc). We live in a world that

stands witness to the destruction of these sources

that are so difficult or impossible to recover by a

history that is so poor in written records. It is not enough that specialists discuss about

monuments during workshops, that mass-media

sometimes makes isolated mentions of them, or that

they are included, in name only, in patrimony lists

compiled by institutions meant to protect them. One

must do more than that! We must collect them in a

VISUAL DATABASE available to all those who might

have INITIATIVES TOWARDS THEIR EFECTIVE

PRESERVATION (obviously, according to certain

standards).

This segment of medievistica.ro is meant to

gather relevant images depicting the state of

preservation of medieval churches in Romania,

illustrating their problems, but also offering

examples of initiatives belonging to the civil society

in favor of patrimony conservation.

Take part in the creation of this database!

One day, you might see that the roof of the church

you contributed with has been repaired. This detail

might be essential for the monument’s survival over

the next years. Select between 2 and 4 images relevant for the

monument’s state, name them according to the church’s location

(city/town, county) and confessional belonging (where
